Organization/Team Mission
This role sits within Mercari Groupâs cross-functional Creative organization, which is responsible for driving creative excellence across the entire group. Within this organization, the role works directly with the Cross-border businessâincluding Marketing, Product Design, and Productâto lead the business through creativity.

Through the development and execution of brand strategy, this role integrates marketing strategy and product experience (UI/UX) through the power of creativity, generating strong synergy across touchpoints. By delivering a consistent brand story from advertising to in-product experiences and actively leveraging emerging technologies such as AI, this role contributes to strengthening global brand value and accelerating sustainable growth.

Why this role exists
This role exists to define and protect Mercariâs Cross-border brand and experience as the business scales globally. As Mercari expands across markets, channels, and surfaces, brand and experience fragmentation becomes a real riskâslowing teams down, diluting trust, and weakening impact.
This role ensures that Mercari presents one coherent, intentional brand and experienceâacross marketing, product, and physical touchpointsârather than a collection of disconnected efforts. The Creative Director sets the creative bar, defines what âgoodâ looks like, and ensures that every expression of the brand reinforces Mercariâs value, credibility, and ambition on a global stage.
Work Responsibilities
Lead Integrated Brand Strategy and Communication
- Define and lead an integrated brand strategy across all customer touchpointsâmarketing, product, and operationsâaligned to the growth phase of the Cross-border business.
- Maximize Mercariâs brand value in global markets by defining, operating, and evolving a consistent visual identity and communication guidelines.
Connect Marketing and Product Through Creative Strategy
- Develop creative strategies that seamlessly integrate brand marketing initiatives with in-product online experiences and offline physical presence, ensuring a cohesive and continuous brand experience.
- Partner closely with Product teams to deeply understand evolving value propositions and experience intent, and collaborate with Marketing to optimize creative direction across the full user journeyâfrom acquisition through retention.
Creative Leadership and Partner Management
- Collaborate with and lead internal creatives, external agencies, production partners, and global vendors by setting clear creative direction and ensuring high-quality outcomes.
- Drive adoption of AI tools and share best practices to improve creative production, operational efficiency, and overall team capability.
Market Insight and Innovation
- Continuously monitor global marketing trends, creative trends, and competitive landscapes to evolve Mercariâs services and brand presence.
- Actively explore how AI and emerging technologies are transforming creativityâdeveloping new expressions, streamlining production processes, and innovating communication approaches to keep the brand fresh and competitive.
Cross-functional Stakeholder Management
- Represent the Creative organization and act as a connector across Product Managers, Engineers, Designers, and Marketers to maximize creativity-led synergy and impact across the organization.

Qualifications
- Required Experience/Skills
- 10+ years of professional experience as a Creative Director, Art Director, or equivalent role at an agency or in-house organization.
- Proven experience working in global environments or leading creative direction for global brands.
- Experience defining and driving integrated brand strategies for EC, platform, or marketplace businesses.
- Strong understanding of both marketing and product, with demonstrated experience integrating the two into cohesive communication and experiences.
- Extensive experience selecting, managing, and maintaining high quality standards with external partners (agencies, production companies, etc.).
- Strong literacy, curiosity, and motivation to apply emerging technologiesâincluding generative AIâto creative work and business outcomes.
- Experience working on Cross-border e-commerce or large-scale services with international expansion.
- Experience building and operating design systems, and applying brand guidelines within product experiences.
- Proven track record of driving innovation through creativity in cross-functional, organization-wide initiatives.
- Experience in motion design, photography, or visual storytelling.
