Merpay Credit Modeling team's mission is to "create a credit business that delivers value to everyone using high-quality data science and machine learning technology." Under this mission, we handle everything from identifying business challenges to model construction, development, and operations.
As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer, you will contribute to the architectural design and implementation of next-generation credit models, while also developing and operating proprietary credit models using Mercari/Merpay data.

Work Responsibilities
- Contribute to business growth through the development, operation, and improvement of credit models:
- Planning: Identifying issues, verbalizing them, and proposing solutions.
- Evaluation Design: Designing evaluations that include not only offline metrics but also key business KPIs, risk metrics, and UX.
- Operational Design: Designing SLOs/operations, including detection of drift, model performance degradation, and bugs, through to permanent resolutions.
- Technical Decision-Making: Determining modeling strategies (interpretability vs. performance, online/batch, real-time requirements, boundaries with rule-based systems, etc.).
- Model Construction: Design and implementation including data analysis, feature engineering, design and implementation of ML models for tabular data, maintenance of inference/training pipelines, ensuring reproducibility, experiment management, and model quality assurance.
- Leading consensus-building and collaboration involving stakeholders in product, business, legal, and compliance.
- Exploring and developing next-generation credit models.
- Providing technical mentoring to team members.

Qualifications
- Required Experience/Skills
- Someone who can align with the mission and values of the Mercari Group and its companies.
- 3+ years of experience building ML models and developing ML products using machine learning libraries such as scikit-learn, LightGBM, and PyTorch
- 1+ year of hands-on experience in model operations / MLOps, including monitoring design, alert operations, model update processes, and incident response.
- 2+ years of experience with databases/SQL, and experience in analysis and feature engineering.
- 2+ years of experience as a leader for teams/projects of 4+ members, including tech stack, design reviews, and mentoring.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate smoothly with team members and stakeholders.
- Preferred Experience/Skills
- Financial institutions or fintech domain background.
- Data analysis and system/software development experience in cloud environments such as AWS and Google Cloud.
- Development and operations experience with deep learning models such as LLMs and foundation models.
