Team mission and expectations of the role

  • Mercari’s Crossborder Team is developing new frameworks and sales channels with the goal of allowing users around the world to buy and sell items across borders on the Mercari marketplace app.
  • This team plays a direct role in achieving Mercari Group’s mission to “circulate all forms of value to unleash the potential in all people” by connecting people and items globally to create a world in which anyone can easily enjoy buying and selling.

Work Responsibilities 

  •  Accurately identifying the value Mercari can provide to people in and outside Japan, and planning and moving forward projects to maximize that value while involving different internal and external stakeholders.
  • Building relationships and sharing information with existing or potential alliance partners in order to organize, plan, and communicate the strategies that our company should take, as well as assembling and driving the necessary teams both internally and externally.
  • Calculating backwards to determine the strategic actions necessary to achieve the company's mission, and implementing the preparations and initiatives that will yield effective results at the right time.
  • Specifically, your two main roles in this position will be to plan and establish new crossborder businesses and to further grow our existing businesses.
  • Examples of specific work responsibilities include the following:
    • Developing and negotiating partnerships with new business partners in and outside Japan and creating business opportunities
    • Handling various project management tasks with external partners
    • Planning and implementing new services
    • Working together with internal stakeholders (including the Product, Policy Planning, and Risk Management Teams)

Unique Challenges 

  • The crossborder business connects directly to Mercari’s mission to “circulate all forms of value to unleash the potential in all people.” As a member of this team, you will have the unique opportunity to provide our users with the experience of connecting and completing a transaction with someone on the other side of the world.
  • Our crossborder team is a small team of a select few. You will be expected to take on roles across areas such as business development, marketing, and project management to realize the success and growth of our crossborder business.
  • Until now, we have grown sales by expanding upon our existing frameworks (selling Mercari items overseas through intermediaries). However, going forward, this team will create brand-new frameworks to seize various new business opportunities in the crossborder domain.
  • This is a challenging position that will require you to develop a new business while using the assets owned by Japan’s largest marketplace app, but a rewarding one that will have a big global impact if successful.
  • We are actively expanding our crossborder business to more countries, so this position offers plenty of opportunities for overseas business trips.
  • Mercari’s Japan offices are home to members of many different nationalities and global backgrounds incorporating their diverse perspectives to take on new challenges every day.


Qualifications 

  • Required Experience/Skills
    • Shared belief in the mission and values of Mercari Group and its various companies
    • Passion for creating new business opportunities
    • At least three years of practical experience in business development for a consumer-facing service (C2C and/or B2C), or experience consulting for, investing in, or partnering with such services  
    • Fulfills at least one of the following in terms of experience and skills:
      • Corporate planning for a consumer-facing service (C2C and/or B2C)
      • Handling project management, collaboration, partnerships, and negotiation of contracts with major businesses
      • Planning, developing, launching, and promoting a new business
      • Planning and executing the marketing for a new business
    • The sense of ownership, innovative spirit, and strong execution skills necessary to overcome external constraints
  • Preferred Experience/Skills
    • Experience negotiating with overseas businesses
    • Experience in crossborder e-commerce business development
    • Experience launching a new business or company
    • Experience in marketing and product management
    • Experience in forming objective hypotheses at a consulting firm or investment bank
    • Ability to analyze data (using SQL, BigQuery, Google Sheets, etc.) 
  • Language 
    • Japanese: Independent (CEFR - B2) required
    • English: Independent (CEFR - B2) preferred
    • Mandarin: Independent (CEFR - B2) preferred

業務内容
